Here’s what could happen if you bring a fancy new cleaning gadget into your home: sparks will fly and love will bloom. And that’s not just between your lazy bones and your Vorwerk self-propelled vacuum. Your toy robot, a randy little guy with an eye for fresh meat, wants in on the action, too.
This new commercial, a continuation of the current robot rage in advertising, stars a classic character with shades of Wall-E pursuing an automaton that may just be out of his league. He’s undaunted, though, willing to make a goof of himself for the object of his affection. Look at him dance!
Most Adorable Vacuum Ad ‘Love Sucks’ is Cuter than anything
The ad called Love Sucks, from Saatchi & Saatchi Düsseldorf, breathes anthropomorphic life into the collectible toy and gives it a sweet, if relentless, personality. It’s hard to root against him, especially when he writes valentines, picks daisies and plays guitar.
It helps plenty that there’s a cover of Burt Bacharach’s romantic ditty, “This Guy’s in Love With You,” as the soundtrack. Who knew that desktop toy was such a Casanova?
Advertisers as diverse as ASB Bank, Cadillac and Maker’s Mark have used robots in recent ad campaigns, some featuring the hardware as cold and efficient models of modern technology and others softening up the characters with human feelings. GE, for its Brilliant Machines ad series, has resurrected famous robots from KITT (Knight Rider) to Robby the Robot (cult favorite flick, Forbidden Planet) to the android from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
